Language Time

After our morning calendar time we move into our language block!  We begin with a morning phonemic awareness activity.  This week we are working hard on listening to beginning sounds in words.  We are also listening to a sentence and counting the words in a sentence.

This week our stories are all about pets! Today Mrs. Faas read a story called Please, Puppy, Please!  With this story we are working on the comprehension skill of story structure.  The children are being introduced to the words: characters and setting.  We are also talking about what happens first in a story, next, and last.

Finally we were off to language centers to practice all the skills we have been talking about and practicing!  Here are a few snapshots of some of our centers.

Write the Room is a fun center where we are walking around the room and writing down some of our friends' names.

Word work center today was all about nouns! Children sorted pictures of nouns into the categories of person, place, animal, or thing.

Bookmaking this week is working on beginning sounds.  Children are stamping a picture in their book and then filling in the beginning sound.

Letter work was glue it, stamp it, write it!  We are working on 5 new letters!

At the teacher table we have been working on the letter M.  Today's group completed their rocket writing sheet to practice correct formation of the letter m.  They also worked on reading a short book on the letter M.  This book covers our word wall words that we have learned so far (I/like/the). We also are continuing to work on the concept of what a letter is, what a word is, and what a sentence is.
And the biggest challenge was pointing to the words as we read the sentences!
